Behind the scenes[]
Originally, the fact that Alexander and Gwydion are twins was twice mentioned by birds in KQ3 if the player has cast the optional Understanding the Language of Creatures spell.
Beyond that are occasional references to the fact in the manuals, hintbooks, strategy guides, InterAction magazine articles, and the about menus in KQ5CD and KQ6. In most sources it’s a single reference or two, often in relation to summaries of the events of KQ3.
The King’s Quest Companion books make the most references in single source (at around 11-13 references total to the twins in the various editions).
In the novel trilogy it’s never mentioned that they are twins and one book might even imply they were born about three years apart in that series.
The idea of Alexander and Rosella being twins is likely taken from the story of Rapunzel in which she gave birth to twins (a boy and a girl) in the desert while her prince was lost.
The birth of the twins varies between sources. With it being almost a year after KQ2 in some of the earliest materials from King's Quest 1-3 (see OT timeline) , two years after KQ2 in the KQ4 manual, or several years after KQ2 in some of the later materials (KQ5 Hintbook). The KQ8 manual places KQ6, as twenty years after KQ2 "score of years" (making the birth about 2 years after KQ2).
The Zodiac symbol for Gemini the twins appears in KQ8.
