Behind the scenes[]
Perhaps Valanice was to have died in a early version of the story. Traditionally in several nations, ships are only named after the deceased. But this is not the case as Valanice was alive and well. This custom is not always upheld by every country. The United States has named some ships after the living since 1974.
This is one example where one expanded material source is at odds with another expanded universe source in that the ship is given two separate names in alternate sources. In the companion it is known as the Johannes Bey.
