Sam was a Hobbit, and friend of Frodo.
Background[]
Sam and Frodo were at the tower of Cirith Ungol in Mordor. Guarded by the black Watchers, Sam and Frodo were able to pass when Sam held up the elven-glass of Galadriel to them. the glass counteracted the deadly force of the glittering eyes, and the great gate, and the Watchers, were destroyed.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
This is a reference to the character Sam Gamgee. Although Sam's last name is not given in the Companion, the identity of the character is obvious. It is not the same character Sam, that is related to Dink, and a friend of Cassimas.
Hobbits or more specifically the book, 'The Hobbit' is mentioned in Hoyle I, by the character Cassie, in reply to King's Quest characters Graham and Rosella.
