Behind the scenesEdit

A jinx, in popular superstition and folklore, is:

  • A type of curse placed on a person that makes them prey to many minor misfortunes and other forms of bad luck;
  • A person afflicted with a similar curse, who, while not directly subject to a series of misfortunes, seems to attract them to anyone in his vicinity.
  • An object or person that brings bad luck.

This would suggest that Rocky maybe bad luck creature. A number of deaths due take place in his room or near him including death by giant spider, or by man-eating plants.

In the new reboot series its treated as an entire species/race. The Jinx is specifically mentioned in the Companion (where its used as a title, rather than necessarily a species name), but the name apparently originates from the game's development, as the creature is called a 'jinx' in the game files. It is not known who inspired who or came up with the name in the first place, as both sources were under development around the same time.

The new King's Quest series (reboot universe) makes a nod to the jinxes. It says Graham and his sisters kept jinxes as pets.

The title or race name 'jinx' mentioned in the KQ Companion, but originates from the game files/concept material ('script.024') in the KQ5 game itself.

In KQ5NES the rock creature is literally a living rock capable of rolling away on its own after the Elf asks it too.
