The place between the worlds is a swirly place with portals leading to realms across the multiverse.
Background[]
Appearing as a vortex of magical energy, it is a strange, misty (and murky) place of ancient magic between the worlds of the multiverse.[1] It consists of a multicolored whirlpool or whirlwind (largely shades of white, orange, pink, violet, purple, and tapering off into dark and murky spot at the bottom) that sucks people or things from one world into another.[2]
At the bottom there is murk all around, and it is hard to sea. In time this transforms into a whirling wind-hot and filled with yellow dust before opening up in the sky and dropping a person into the desert of Eldritch.[3]
This is a place where magic and science coexist, where dreams, the aether and cyberspace come together linking both the physical realities and gaming realities.
Rosella and Valanice found themselves tumbling over and over through the strange dimension. Different entrances and exits out of the aether lead between the World of Daventry and different parts of the alternate universe Realm of Eldritch. One such entrance/exit in Daventry included the Looking Pool in Kingdom of Daventry's castle garden. Other entrances/exits included whirlwinds in Eldritch's desert, or the mirror in Troll King's bedroom.
It is likely this is related to the same magical passage people used to withdraw to the World of Daventry in its distant past.
While travel between magical realms works in both directions (assuming the portals aren't closed off), the spell used to withdraw allows for only one way travel between Earth (Other World) to the World of Daventry (from a world of science to the world of magic).
It also appears that the place between the worlds leads to the Black Abyss as well. Night Mare flies between the worlds, and comes to World of Daventry to feed upon the nightshade.[4]

Behind the scene[]
Derek Karlavaegen sent messages between the worlds with the use of the Eye Between the Worlds.
Lori Cole has suggested that such "World Gates" leading between worlds has at times connected Daventry to the world of Gloriana, explaining the appearance or mentions of Rosella, Graham, Cedric, etc in Gloriana, and the reference to Famous Adventurer's Correspondence School in Daventry (KQ1SCI). Similarly the between worlds/place between worlds/world between worlds/dimension between worlds/gate between worlds/limbo state between dimensions exists as a nebulous dream like area that lies between the various worlds/dimensions of the multiverse/universe, or whatever you want to call it.
Compare with the 'Woods between the worlds' from Chronicles of Narnia, which was filled with ponds that lead to various worlds across the multiverse.

Her mother, Queen Valanice, has jumped in after her in an attempt to find her errant daughter. Over and over they tumbled, through a strange misty place between the worlds. Valanice surfaced in a strange and mystical desert which shimmers with heat and crackles with magic. Rosella, on the other hand, has found herself someplace entirely different...
- ↑ It was singing the loveliest song, and it flew right past my face and through the surface of the pool and into a door. And the door was about to close!" I could see her as though very far away, through a door that was very nearly closed.
- ↑ I gave no real thought to the wonder, or the possible danger of what I saw; I immediately jumped in and followed her. Then something grabbed Rosella and snatched her away! There was a murk all around, and I couldn't see where it took her. Then the murk became a whirling wind-hot and filled with yellow dust.
