Pan

Pan was a god of nature, seen in the land of Tamir. He was of the satyr race. He liked to roam the province and playing a Maytime dance with his flute.

Background[]

Pan is a satyr, who is half-man and half-goat. He can occasionally be observed dancing around and playing his flute. It's obvious that he loves music, but isn't necessarily attached to his flute. He was open to new options.[1]

After receiving the lute from the minstrel, Rosella encountered the demigod Pan, who was dancing and playing a flute. Rosella joined the half-man half-beast by playing a tune on her lute. After she gave the lute to Pan, he gave the girl his flute and fled. Rosella used the flute to charm the snake guarding the magic fruit.[2]

Pan is sometimes confused with a satyr, who is a Pan-like creature with the head and torso of a human and the legs, horns, and ears of a goat. Pan was more beast than man and was thought by some to be the god of fertility and the protector of herds and flocks. He played the pipes and could make beasts stampede; it is from what word "panic" comes from. The satyrs, on the other hand, were playful rogues, lovers of wine, women, song, and dance. Their instrument was the flute, and they delighted in playing it while dancing with nymphs in the forest.[3]

He is not related to Peter Pan.[4]

Behind the scenes[]

Pan is a god from Greek mythology, associated with Faunus and faun race in Roman mythology.

In KQ4, Pan is a mix between a satyr and Pan. He is said to be a member of the satyr race, as well as a god.

In Companion while in-universe Pan is associated with Satyrs by Valanice and some writers. In 2nd Edition, An Encyclopedia of Daventry points out that this is more of a misconception and that one is a diety related to Greek/Roman gods, while the other is a race, not divine.

Despite it being said that Pan plays a "Maytime dance" in the King's Quest Companion, KQ3 took place during the summer (based in KQ3), which took place moments before KQ4. The story does confirm it to take place during summer however.[5]

Pan in KQ4 doesn't talk, or is not able to. Most of the time he ignores any inquires by Rosella, or pays no attention. At other times, when he is paying attention, he never responds.
