The Marquis of Daventry is the title of nobility given to the guardian of Daventry’s frontier regions.

Background[]

Marquis of Daventry has the responsibility of securing the kingdom’s borders from any outside attacks or evil intentions.

The elderly King Graham, was very grateful to the local knight, Connor, for saving the Kingdom of Daventry from the evil Archarchon, Lucreto, and restoring the Mask of Eternity to its salubrious, protective powers. So grateful, in fact, that he had given Connor the title of Marquis of Daventry.

Behind the scenes[]

While the position of Marquis of Daventry was not mentioned previously earlier potential Marquis could have included Hereward, Edward’s best friend, and father of Graham who died during the Border wars. Even his Graham’s grandfather (Sir Cracker) who defeated the Dragon of Herenna. Even Graham, Edward’s favorite knight could have had the title too. There were a number of potential knights who could have been the Maquis during events of The Floating Castle such as Kenneth of Daventry, Brian of Daventry, and Aubrey, or even David of Bruce.

Marquis (France) is a European title of nobility, ranking in modern times immediately below a duke and above a count, or earl. Etymologically the word marquess or margrave denoted a count or earl holding a march, or mark, that is, a frontier district; but this original significance has long been lost.

In western Europe the Carolingian marchionesor margraves had been royal officials whose duty of defending a frontier might justify an exception being made to the normal rule that no count should hold more than one countship, or county. Their authority was thus not much less than that of a duke; indeed the term Markherzog (“mark duke”) is occasionally found instead of Markgraf (“mark count”). But as conditions on the frontiers or the frontiers themselves were changed, the special importance of the old marches diminished.
