Connor picked up the floating Lever of Life from the Altar of Azriel. With the Lever he was able to spin the four Pedestals of Death in order to unlock the sacred Sanctum of Azriel, Lord of Death. Once the fourth pedestal had been turned and the door to Sanctum of Azriel opened, it became stuck having fulfilled its appointed task.
