The laughing willows are a race of sentient races of trees that live in the Gilliken country in Oz.

Background[]

In Oz, in the Gilliken country, is a grove of willows that bother people by laughing at them as they pass by. They are cousins, of course, to the weeping willows. There are also stories of trees that throw their apples at a person if they try to pick them.

Behind the scenes[]

The 'laughing willows' appear in the The Lost King of Oz (1925) is the nineteenth in the series of Oz books created by L. Frank Baum and his successors, and the fifth written by Ruth Plumly Thompson. It was Illustrated by John R. Neill.
