Background[]
The Known World is lies within the known seas.[5]
In contrast, the frontier areas where there is little knowledge are known as the Unknown, most of which lies on the other side of the world.
Four or five large countries make up the great countries of the known world (though this number has changed over time). The known world is made up of many island lands and kingdoms as well, including the Green Isles, Enchanted Isles, Blue Islands, Monticore etc.
Valanice is one of the finest scholars in the land and her writings grace the libraries of the Known World.
Llewdor’s one major city, Port Bruce, is a healthy sea-trading town, where ships from all parts of the known world visit.
The Ye Olde Antique Shoppe in Kolyma is said to be the only establishment of its kind in the known world. In it, the proprietress Milvia has collected and collated curiosities and conversation pieces from all the crannies and corners of creation.
It is said that every princess in the known world was dying to marry Prince Throckmorton.[6] Everyone except Rosella that is.
The location of the Green Isles is so far from the rest of the known world, combined with the dangers of the surrounding sea, have effectively isolated it from the influence of other lands. This small kingdom might as well exist on a distant star as on the other side of an inhospitable sea.[7]
