King's Quest was a 1984 MS-DOS port of the original King's Quest (PCjr).

Background[]

Become Sir Graham, bravest of knights. Locate and return to King Edward the lost treasures of the Kingdom of Daventry, so that you may inherit the throne. Be prepared. The journey will surely prove long and treacherous. You may choose among many paths open to you. The more clever and resourceful you prove yourself, the greater your reward.

The Most Fun You'll Ever Have Playing Adventure Games.

King's Quest is the first of a new generation of Sierra computer games. It's revolutionary design features three-dimensional graphics and unparalleled characters that run, swim, attack and much more. Through joystick or keyboard command, even whole sentences if you wish, guide Sir Graham on his quest.

You can play King's Quest over and over again because ther's more than one way to solve each "mystery" and overcome each "obstacle." The more clever your solutions, the more points you earn.

Version Information[]

  • This version was ported over to IBM in CGA graphics (4 color RGB/16-color composite). There is no EGA compatibility in this version.
  • This version came in grey/silver King's Quest big box originally.
  • This is one of the first versions to come with the Annette Childs' story manual (although there are no credits in the manual to show this).
  • This is one of the first versions with Sir Graham (as opposed to Sir Grahame).
  • This version include a company logo screen (showing Sierra's logo)
  • The title screen music is the same fanfare that plays when Castle Gates are opened, but repeated several times.
  • The alligators are simply sprite of the Dragon's head.
  • The Sorcerer is a separate character (from the KQ2 Enchanter) with its own unique sprite (part of this is explained by the fact that the later 1987 version was built off of the AGI system being used by KQ2 at the time).
  • Edward has an extra animation at the end where he does a silly and cartoony pirouette before falling to the ground dead (this animation does not exist in the 1987 versions, but is still in the files).
  • The player has the ability to drop items, removing them from the game.
  • There are some other slight script differences between this version, the PCJR version, and the 1987 version.
