In the magical kingdom of Daventry Queen Valanice is concern about the lack of interest by Princess Rosella in pursuing marriage. As they stroll along the Daventry countryside discussing the princess' future Rosella is distracted by a reflection she sees in a pond. When a strange creature pops out of the water and then back in Rosella is intrigued and dives into the magical pond to follow. The startled Valanice immediately plunges in to save Rosella but a whirlpool has whisked each to a different part of a magical realm called Eldritch. While searching for each other they both learn that this wondrous world is haunted by an evil enchantress named Malicia. Traveling between the Desert the Vulcanix Underground the town of Falderal the land of Ooga Booga and Etheria among others each meets many interesting characters including the Three Fates the Headless Horseman and the Troll King. You must help Queen Valanice and Princess Rosella to defeat the evil Malicia who plans to destroy Eldritch. Only then will Princess Rosella find her true love and long-lasting romance.

Princess Rosella has leapt through a magical door into the mysterious Realm of Eldritch in an attempt to escape boredom and an impending arranged marriage. Her mother, Queen Valanice, has jumped in after her in an attempt to find her errant daughter. Over and over they tumbled, through a strange misty place between the worlds. Valanice surfaced in a strange and mystical desert which shimmers with heat and crackles with magic. Rosella, on the other hand, has found herself someplace entirely different...

Your goal in this chapter is to explore the strange world in which Princess Rosella has found herself... Remember, this magical land is MUCH bigger than the screen you first see.

In King's Quest VII, you play two different characters: Princess Rosella of Daventry ahd her mother, Queen Valanice. Valanice is attempting (not for the first time, we assume) to talk her daughter into marriage with some basic prince or another. Rosella's friends are all doing so, Valanice reasons; she's almost twenty years old and its about time that Rosella begins settling down. Perhaps Val's anxious to become a grandmother.

Anyway, Rosella is not too pleased with the idea, preferring to run away from the everyday life of being  a beautiful princess, to have adventures, and to visit fairy tale castles in the sky. She sings of her dreams as her mother drones on, then dives into a looking-pond to follow a tiny dragonet that has suddenly appeared, as if from those very dreams.

Valanice hears the splash and sees Rosella disappear under the water. Stoppping to pick up Rosella's comb, the queen jumps in to rescue her daughter. Just as their hands are about to touch, a mysterious arm appears, snatches the princess and vanishes---Rosella along with the arm.

Rosella of Daventry is reaching marriagable age, and her mother Valanice hopes to find a suitable match for her daughter. Unfortunately Rosella has no interest, either in the men her mother has chosen, or in marriage itself! As the two of them walk in the woods, discussing this very subject, Rosella sees a small dragon-sprite leap from a pond, leaving behind it an image of a fantastic castle floating in the clouds. Intrigued, and feeling mischevious, Rosella dives into the pond and disappears. Valanice leaps in after her, and the two find themselves drawn into a vortex of magical energy, and seperated.
