KQ4 manual[]

Once, in a kingdom called Daventry, there lived a King named Edward. Daventry was a very old kingdom, and it had its share of kings, both good and bad, over the thousands of years. King Edward was a very good King, but he was also very old, and without children. Disorder ruled the land since the loss of the Three Great Treasures. King Edward feared that disorder might degenerate further once he died. Besides, he knew (as well did his people) that without an heir to the throne the kingdom would be in dire straits indeed. Thus, King Edward sent for his favorite knight, Sir Graham.

You are the bravest and most trustworthy of my knights, quick of wit and stout of heart. I have chosen you to succeed me as king, but first you must prove yourself worthy of my crown. Far beyond the walls of this castle lie shrouded the Three Great Treasures of Daventry, stolen years ago by stealth and sorcery. This kingdom will not be restored to its former glory and prosperity until these great treasures are returned to their rightful hearth. Succeed in this, my request, and the crown shall become yours upon my death. Fail, and our once beautiful kingdom will fall to the hands of evil forces who will use the powerful magic of the Three Great Treasures against us.

"May you return victorious, Sir Graham!"

Thus Sir Graham ventured where most humankind dared not tread, and returned home victorious with the cherished Treasures of Daventry, as is chronicled in the tale Quest For the Crown.

KQ4 Glass Bottle[]

Anybody out there! I had a condor drop this bottle in the nearest ocean to beg for help with "King's Quest I." Help me fight this fire-breathing dragon!

KQ5 manual[]

Long ago, in the kingdom of Daventry, there were three magical treasures that kept the kingdom strong and prosperous: A magic mirror that foretold the future, an enchanted shield with the power to overthrow any invaders, and a treasure chest that was never empty. These treasures were taken from Daventry by deception and stealth, and without them Daventry grew poor and weak and King Edward, once a stout-hearted and vigorous ruler, had become powerless and sickly. Edward had no heir, and everyone feared the chaos that would result on his death.

King Edward asked his bravest knight, Sir Graham, to embark upon a quest to recover the three treasures. Graham's quest was successful, and as his reward, King Edward named Sir Graham his heir and granted him the throne of Daventry.

The chronicles of Graham's search for the royal treasures of Daventry are recounted in King's Quest I: Quest for the Crown.

About KQ5[]

In this game, Sir Graham is introduced and you can help him become King of Daventry by finding the realm's three lost treasures.

KQ5 hintbook[]

Sir Graham...lived in the enchanted land of Daventry. He was the favored knight of Daventry's monarch, King Edward the Benevolent. As King Edward was getting on in years, was in poor health, and had no heirs, he decided to call for his favorite knight one fine spring day with a special pronouncement. He informed Sir Graham of his dilemma of having no heirs, and thus no one to replace him should he die, and which in his weakened condition could be soon. He told of three treasures belonging to the kingdom of Daventry, which had been stolen in times past by some less than agreeable characters: a magic mirror, which foretold the future; a magic chest, perpetually filled with gold coins; and a magic shield, which would protect the bearer from any harm. But since the disappearance of these treasures, Sir Graham was informed, Daventry has weakened, and may soon crumble and die along with its old monarch.

This was terrible news indeed, but King Edward had a solution to his problems; if Sir Graham could find, and return, the three lost treasures of Daventry, he would be crowned king after King Edward's death. Saddened by the thought of the old king's death, but heartened by the possibility of helping Daventry, Sir Graham bravely set out to recover the stolen treasures. After various adventures and altercations, Graham successfully retrieved the three treasures and brought them back in triumph to his king. Soon thereafter, though, King Edward died and Sir Graham was indeed crowned King of Daventry.

KQ6 Hintbook[]

The First Adventure of King Graham (In which he Earns the Throne of Daventry, and Saves the Land from certain Destruction)

Sir Graham was a young man of nineteen years when he was summoned to appear before the beloved King Edward the Benevolent. The old King was dying, and he bid Graham, a promising young knight and the son of the King's best friend, to undergo a dangerous quest. It was known to all that many years prior the king had lost the three great treasures of Daventry; Merlin's Mirror, the Shield of Achille, and the Chest of Gold. Although he had searched ever since, King Edward had been unable to recover them. Without these mystical items, the kingdom had been in a steady decline. The king sent young Sir Graham forth to recover the treasures, promising him the crown if he were to return successful. There was an unspoken understanding between the two good men that to fail would mean the death of Daventry. With this heavy burden on his young shoulders brave Graham set forth. He journeyed across his own tortured land, made alien and frightening by the influence of evil. He met many terrifying creatures; witches, ogres, wicked sorcerers and the like, and dealt with all by force or by wit. He also made many good friends, who helped him on his way. The young knight at last returned to Castle Daventry victorious. Scant hours after Graham was crowned king, Edward the Benevolent slipped away into the long sleep of death. It is said the strong, brave King Graham wept like a child.

KQ7 Hintbook[]

It was just a few days past Sir Graham's 19th birthday, but the young knight was bummed. Good King Edward was dying. Edward called for Graham, who was his favorite knight, and sent him on a dangerous mission. You see, many years back, the king had lost the three great treasures Daventry: Merlin's Mirror, the Shield of Achilles, and the Chest of Gold. How'd he manage that, you ask? Well, between you and me, King Edward was a really sweet old guy, but a little naive. Anyway, ever since the magic treasures had been missing, the kingdom had gone into a tailspin. Edward sent Graham out to recover the lost treasures before the Kingdom of Daventry bit the dust, and promised to make the young knight king if he succeeded. Graham set out to look for the lost goodies, and found out in a big hurry what a mess Daventry had become. Under the influence of evil, it had filled up with witches, ogres, wicked sorcerers, and all sorts of unsavory critters. Graham was a smart kid, so he managed to whip them all, either by knocking the stuffing out of them, or outwitting them (ogres aren't the smartest guys around). He made quite a few buds, who helped him on his way. To make a long story short, he found the three treasures, and returned to the castle victorious. Graham was crowned king, but a few hours later, poor old Edward passed out of the veil of tears. That night, after his coronation, King Graham, went into his chambers and cried, which goes to show you that it's OK for strong, brave dudes to show their feelings.

KQ7 Authorized Guide[]

(The original title was plain ol' King's Quest) tells the story of a young knight of Daventry named Graham. He's summoned by his monarch, King Edward, who had no heirs. Graham was tasked to find the three great, and now lost, treasures of the realm before invaders overran the kingdom. He is promised the throne of Daventry as a reward if he is successful.

Suitably motivated, Graham tromped off, defeated a fire-breathing dragon to retrieve the Magic Mirror, fiddled around a bit with some leprechauns to get back the Magic Shield, and climbed to the top of a really big beanstalk to get the ever-full Chest of Gold from a giant. The dragon, broomstick witch, sorcerer, troll, hungry wolf, nasty dwarf, and riddlesome Rumplestiltskin he encountered along the way kept life interesting for him.

When Graham, quests completed, finally returned to Castle Daventry with the treasures, good King Edward was true to his word and gave Graham his crown. Then the ex-monarch dropped dead on the spot, immediately eliminating any of the inconveniences that are possible when an ex-king is hanging around while the new kid on the throne is trying to rule.
