- Necronomicon. Iä R'lyea! Cthulhu ftagn! Iä! Iä! is a great spell found in dark books such as the
Background[]
It is a spell of immense power used in the summoning of the great god Cthulhu from his watery grave in the lost city of R'lyea. The spell is used in praising the god and bringing it forth from its underwater city of R'lyea.
These are words of power known by Crispinophur.
It's not clear if, Alexander cast this spell, or it was a coincidence that Cthulhu rose from the depths... Some weeks after his return to Daventry, Alexander cast a great storm spell on the pirates that tried to enslave him, destroying their ship and stranding them in the sea. Some were consumed by sharks and others swallowed by a great squid after being crushed in its tentacles. One lone survivor washed up on shore babbling about the fate of his crew, and whimpering a word that sounded something like "Cthulhu," but his mind had been shattered by the experience and he only continued to chatter incoherently.
Behind the scenes[]
It is an abridged version of the phrase Iä! Iä! Cthulhu fhtagn! Ph'nglui mglw'nfah Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn!, which translates as; "Hail! Hail! Cthulhu Dreams! In his house at R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming." This would make the above magic spell's translation essentially "Hail R'lyea! Cthulhu dreams! Hail! Hail!"
It's not clear if the squid feeding on the pirates was actual squid or a description of Cthulhu's face.
