The Graham family[1][2](aka King Graham family[3][4][5], and the Grahams[6]) are the current line of the Royal Family of Daventry.
Background[]
The royal surname appears as Graham on the on the diagram on the "Graham —Family Tree—" document.[7]
Starting with Graham who married Valanice, they gave birth to Rosella and Alexander (who would later become Gwydion). Alexander would later marry Cassima. Rosella after a period of courtship would marry either Edgar or possibly Connor. It is said that Rosella may be impetuous, but she is no fool. She would marry no man before her time, and she knows near nothing of Edgar.
In Graham's past but not listed on the royal family tree documents is Hereward, and his grandfather, the Great-Grandfather of Alexander and Rosella. King Edward may also be be related as a distant cousin through Hereward or his father.
It is unknown if what his grandfather and Hereward's full name were, but at in least some accounts suggest that the family's original surname was Cracker before Graham was married. While taking on the name Graham as his dynastic surname later on.
While they do not yet exist at the time of KQ8, Graham and Valanice think about the grandchildren they will have in the future (during the events of King's Quest 5 in the novelization of the story, and KQ7: The Story Begins). Rosella thinks about her future children in KQ7 as well.

Behind the scenes[]
The term Graham family first appears as King Graham family in the King’s Quest 3-6 hintbooks as “King Graham family”.
it also also appeared in thr first edition of the Official Book of King's Quest as “Graham family”. The author makes a failed prediction that KQ5 would include the wedding between Edgar and Rosella.
Graham Family Tree later appears on a piece of artwork included in the The Official Book of King's Quest (3rd Edition). At the time it only listed up to Cassima (being married into the family), and Rosella was not yet married to Edgar (Roberta Williams has also suggested the possibility that she might marry Connor even, or at least be part of a love triangle between him and Edgar (see King's Quest X)).
Marketing on GOG for KQ4-6 also makes references to the Graham surname.
- The Grahams need your help, so don't fear, brave adventurer, and embark on a journey of your dreams.
in KQ2 you can ask the parser what is Graham’s “first name” and receive the response that it is Cracker (although tecuncially the point of this Easter egg is to ask what is his last name as per the hintbook but both options work in the game, or simply using “name” works as well.) The parser commands for reference appear in parser files as “113 last name, name”. Technically asking “what is Grahams first name” also gives the reply but this is because the game defaults to the “name” command in the parser. The “last name” is the main command phrase, while name is alternate. Though “last name” also comes alphabetically first. The hintbook also states that the proper question is “What is Grahams last name?”.
These may be the only sources that might suggest that Graham is Graham's surname (and not necessarily his first name, or possibly that his full name is Graham Graham, though other jokes suggest that his full name might be Graham Cracker)
The Companion makes a prophecy that Graham and Valanice would have 'many fine children' before they grew too old to have children.
‘Many’ means a large number of, a lot of, etc. More than a few, certainly more than a couple. Many amounts to a large number, for example the old Mother Goose nursery rhyme:
- There was an old woman who lived in a shoe.
- She had so many children, she didn't know what to do.
- She gave them some broth without any bread;
- And whipped them all soundly and put them to bed.
In KQ2 prologue in the manual, Edward predicted that Graham’s heir would be a son, a young prince born to his future wife, who ultimately saves his kingdom from ending up like the kingdom in Edward's time (heirless and in decline), a prince who becomes the next king (something that seems somewhat less likely of happening with Alexander's direction in the story). While KQ8 doesn't specify if he has had more children by the time of the events of the game (and manual only covers the history up to events of KQ7, and that of Connor's background), there is a line in the game that suggests Graham has a family (perhaps larger family, with newborns) living in the castle (it could at least be implying that Rosella and Alexander is there in the castle, rather than in Etheria or the Green Isles at the time)[17] In KQ1SCI which takes place in a slightly different alternate world (game reality) to that of the original King's Quest, at the end it speaks of Graham seeing prophecies of his children and their adventures in the future. The plural 'children' could be referring not only to Alex, and Rosella, but other future children destined to be born to his family as well.[18]
Additionally in the SCI timeline it discusses the people of Daventry grew happy and prosperous and flourished years to come, which would suggest either Three-Headed Dragon came many years later, or its impact wasn’t felt as long as Graham continued to sacrifice his kingdom’s girls. However sacrificing the kingdom’s children would likely have hurt the moral of people of Daventry, they would become fearful and unhappy with their king, which would go against the Mirror’s prophecy. As this prosperity flourishing is also tied to his children’s birth would seem to suggest in SCI timeline things were much more peaceful than the original AGI timeline, and something like the Dragon taking over or Alexander’s kidnapping never happened (or otherwise could have been averted with preparation).
In the KQ1SCI universe Graham sees prophecies of his future, including his 'children' and their adventures. This of course would change quite a few things if he knew about his future before it happened. Like he could have protected his son from the kidnapping, prepared for the three-headed dragon early on, etc. Of course the prophecy might also be predicting him having 'many fine children' beyond the two twins (those that Gerwain predicted would be born to the royal family). In fact in KQ2, Edward predicted that his future wife would give him an prince heir would take over the kingdom, to avoid the issue Edward had with no heir. These prophecies have not yet come to pass in the original game universe or its spin-offs. Nor have we seen the many grandchildren that Graham and Valanice dream will be born to their children.
In the reboot series canon Rosella married Edgar and she gave birth to their son Gart, and Alexander and Cassima gave birth to Gwendolyn.
Freddy Pharkas thought Graham's first name was Kay, as in Kay Graham. Katherine “Kay” Graham was owner and publisher of Washington Post between 1963-1991. The Washington Post is an American daily newspaper published in Washington, D.C. It is the most-widely circulated newspaper within the Washington metropolitan area and has a large international audience.
- Announcement to All! I am no longer responsible for any debts incurred by my wife Valanice, my son Alexander or my daughter Rosella. Correspondence may be sent to: K. Graham of Daventry c/o P. Patti Washington D.C. Better not touch it. Whoever this Kay Graham is, she might be very upset.
Sir Kay is also the name of one of the Knights of the Round Table.
