An Englishman (aka the English) is a person from England.
Background[]
It is part of the poem that The Ogre giant recites:
- Fee, fi, fo, fum
- I smell the blood of an Englishman!
- Be he live, or be he dead,
- I'll grind his bones to make my bread!
The Ogre recites it possibly smelling Rosella in his closet, but his wife the Ogress cuts him off before he says Englishman, and tells him he just smells the deer stew she had been cooking.
This may suggest that the people of Daventry were originally from England. The name of their country would also suggest they may have originally been Danes.
