Earth (aka Other World by some people of Daventry) is the name of a planet located in the Milky Way Galaxy of the Universe. The world revolves around the Sun, and shares the solar system with nine other planets including Jupiter. Constellations such as Leo can be seen in its night skies. It is circled by the Moon. Long ago, Earth was home to kingdoms such as Daventry, Serenia, and Llewdor. Some people of those lands also call the world Earth.

In the Ancient One's alphabet earth is represented by the letter corresponding to the letter A.

History[]

Daventry, Serenia, Llewdor and other such lands were kingdoms that existed long, long ago in earth's past[1][2]. As time progressed technology began to displace magic. Mythic creatures and magic users began to be persecuted by the human race, and their lands dwindled as civilization grew. Running out of places to hide, various mythic races and magic wielders used magic to withdraw across the multiverse to the ancient kingdoms to avoid extinction. They knew the passage would be one way, and there would be no return to their own kingdoms. The first withdrawal occured hundreds of thousands of years ago, lead by the great Crispinophur to the land of Serenia. More withdrawals occured around the world for various reasons from places such as Greece, Egypt, and Innsmouth.

People began to call the places they came from the Other World (though many continued to call the world, Earth). They had no name for world they moved into. In time the people learned how to contact the present world or ancient kingdoms through dreams and artifacts such as the Eye Between the Worlds. People such as Roberta Williams dreamt of Daventry and Derek Karlavaegen could send messages to the present world. These methods linked the ancient Daventry to 20th century earth causing them to overlap. This communication between the worlds lead to the creation of the King's Quest Game series (last known contact occured circa 1998 for the creation of King's Quest: Mask of Eternity). In time the bond became stronger in such that the Great Dreamer Roberta was able to have impact on the ancient kingdoms allowing her to reshape them.

Earth may refer to the element of earth. Earth is sometimes used to describe the ground or soil as well. Mother Earth is named after her role as mother of Earth.

Behind the scenes[]

Well, ya, King's Quest is on earth. Daventry is very old city from a long time ago. It's in ruins now and people aren't quite sure exactly where it used to be. There are some archaeologists searching through the ruins, they think they know it's Daventry. But it's somewhere on Earth."

The name of the world as "earth", is mentioned several times throughout the King's Quest series within the manuals and within the games KQ1AGI[6], KQ1SCI[7], KQ2[8], KQ3[9], KQ4, KQ6[10], KQ8[11][12]

Even in KQ1AGI when interacting with the fiddle. It is described as being the poor last 'earthly posession'.[13] Or when falling from the vine... it is called the 'distant earth'.[14]

In KQ3 are both references to 'earth' as in terra firma/soil/dirt/ground, but also earth as a place/or in reference to planet earth (such as 'earthquake').[15]

In KQ4 there are both references to 'earth' as in soil, but also on headstones and Shakespeare with regards to the planet: "Her last words on earth were..."[16]

In KQ5CD is a reference to "the very earth" which is generally an reference to the planet as in "this very earth" (but can also reference to the physical 'earthly' soil which makes up the planet Earth as well, however not generic soil of other planetary surfaces). For example: "As regards the wicked, they will be cut off from the very earth.” ( Proverbs 2:21, 22 )" [17]

In KQ6 earth is also mentioned many times, the first by Valanice when she talks to her son at beginning of the game, a reference to 'earthly possessions' can also be found in the game as well, another reference within the love poems, and several others in relation to physical 'earth' and spiritual plane.[18]

Even Eldritch is described as being on an 'earthly plane' in KQ7 (this may mean a physical plane or parallel earth, as opposed to an 'elemental plane').[19] In the King's Quest Companion, Eldritch is in yet another parallel world from even Daventry. At the end of the game, Edgar, Titania and Oberon, even say that Rosella was lured into another world. One of the falderal inhabitants even tells Valanice that she needs to leave the world, and return to her own world, as it is about to be destroyed by the volcano, and its the only way for her to escape.

In addition, the moon of Eldritch is literally made of green cheese. Whereas the moon of Daventry may actually be the literal "Man on the Moon" (but more or less the same moon as Earth).

In KQC, the Druids describe Alexander as a 'man of Earth'. In KQC, Derek sometimes describes the surface land and that beneath the surface as 'earth'. Such as describing the tunnels leading in the elf cave in the Dark Forest as 'descending into the guts of the earth'. This perhaps reflects his own usage of the term earth to refer to the universe in the Guidebook.[20]

In Romancing the Throne: From the Chronicles of Daventry, Part II, one part describes Graham imagining he can see the "ends of the earth" from on top of the Forest Mountain.

In the KQ5 novel, the story mentions the 'guts of the earth'.

The novel trilogy hints at the world being earth as well.[21][22]

Derek suggests that the 'contemporary time' in Daventry, and time on earth are at different times. This appears to suggest the idea that some kind of time travel or time dilation exists between both worlds.

In Hoyle I, additionally Angola (a prison in Louisiana), Louisiana, Morgan City, Louisiana, Lytton, Oakhurst, and Russia are mentioned by various characters during conversations with Graham and Rosella.
