The Ancient Mariner (aka the Hermit) is a hermit captain that Graham met on the coast of Serenia, living near the Northern Sea. He was hard of hearing, so Graham gave him a conch. He helped save Cedric with poultices, and listened to Graham's plight. He called his friend Pearl to lead Graham to Mordack's Island.

On the beach in Serenia, lives an ancient-looking hermit. He lives in a strange little house made of pieces and parts of wrecked ships.[1]

Although quite old, feeble and almost deaf, age had not taken away his skill with medicinal herbs and natural medicines. he was able to effect a quick cure to the wounds Cedric had suffered at the talons of the harpies.

The hermit may be the same man who once was cursed to wear an albatross around his neck as penance for killing one such harmless bird. That poor soul is said to walk the worlds forever telling his tale, and its moral:

He prayeth well, who loveth well
Both man and bird and beast.
He prayeth best, who loveth best
All things both great and small;
For the dear God who loveth us,
He made and loveth all.

Perhaps the hermit finally found peace to join his forgiveness in a small hut by the ocean. If so, perhaps that is why he heals wounded birds so easily.

It is the hermit's moral, that King Graham seems to embody in his encounters with all that he meets. It is probably why he gets so much aid and comfort from others.[2]

Behind the scenesEdit

The Ancient Mariner is based on the character from 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'.

The KQC, 2nd and 3rd editions describes the connection, and gives the hermit the title Ancient Mariner. He is also known as the Hermit.

In the game the character is listed as 'the Hermit' in the credits.

In KQ5 Hintbook, he is listed as the 'Old hermit'.

In Quest for Daventry he is listed as the Old Man.

Though called 'Ancient', and he does have an a mysterious past, it is unclear, if he is a member of the Ancients or not.
